Peut-on raconter autrement l'histoire de la guerre d'Algérie? L'ambition de ce livre est de rapporter, en se fondant sur toutes les sources possibles et en particulier sur des documents inédits ou difficilement accessibles, un récit de cette guerre telle qu'elle a été vue, vécue et relatée par les Algériens, et en premier lieu par les combattants indépendantistes. Ce second volume, qui s'ouvre avec l'assassinat d'Abane Ramdane par les autres chefs du FLN, au lendemain de la bataille d'Alger, et va jusqu'à l'indépendance et les implacables luttes pour le pouvoir qu'elle entraîne, confirme que, sous ce regard neuf, la plupart des aspects de la guerre prennent un tour totalement différent.
Le temps de la politique et des négociations en vue de mettre un terme au conflit, quand l'aspect militaire du combat devient peu à peu moins essentiel, sera en effet aussi celui de profonds bouleversements, ignorés du côté français, au sein du FLN. Des bouleversements provoquant des affrontements dont les premiers bénéficiaires seront Ahmed Ben Bella et Houari Boumediene au cours de l'été 1962, mais dont les conséquences se font sentir jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
